Ellepot

From gathering data on test machines to shaping a connected IoT experience

Challenge

Which valuable services, based on machine data, can help ensure optimal production conditions and improve workflows for operators of Ellepot machines?

Approach

Design people worked to understand the needs of the users for the new solution. These insights were conducted through user interviews, observations, and lastly mapped out in a stakeholder workshop, creating the foundation for the concept.

Result

Ellepot live is a connected IoT experience, that visually comes to life through a mobile and desktop app. Providing valuable services when needed, the solution makes it easier to order supplies, keep track of production, and troubleshoot problems.

Special paper, trays and sphagnum are essential supplies. With Ellepot Live the customer scans a QR code on the paper roll, simplifying the order process and ensuring the right supplies will be delivered.

The operators keep track of various parameters when supervising the production and they are prepared to take action when needed. With the Ellepot Live app by hand, the operators can get notified by alarms and warnings and get help with troubleshooting, to help fix minor issues and keep the production at speed.

The Dashboard provides an overview of machines and processes, helping the production manager keep track of progress, number of batches, learn from machine history, error notifications and estimate upcoming productions, to ensure on time delivery for their own customers.

“The handling of the machines proved to be as delicate as the potted crops and sprouts that the machines produce. It requires an almost intuitive flair to keep them running.”

When Ellepot and design-people first met, Ellepot had already succeeded gathering data from test machines, in order to get a better understanding of machine use, wear, service, etc. Design-people was asked to decode relevant user needs and design a digital user experience, that will make Ellepot products even more attractive for the customer segment. To succed with the project the team at design-people used following expert tools.

Contextual research: interview and observation

Stakeholder mapping workshop

Concept development: UX flows - look and feel based on Brand guidelines

Design Implementation: UI design elements for development
